Josephine Stiftelsens barnehjem ble grunnlagt i 1834, og er landets eldste barnehjem i kontinuerlig drift.
Grunnleggeren av stiftelsen, John Haugvaldstad, så behovet, og startet barne-hjemmet på idealistisk grunnlag. Legater og gaver var det økonomiske fundament. I alle disse årene har barnehjemmet hatt som grunnleggende siktemål å gi barn og ungdom trygge og gode oppvekstvilkår, for kortere eller lengre tid, når hjemmeforholdene ble for vanskelige.
